It’s Time to Cut the Crap, HFS’s “Asian Slaw” is Straight Up Racist
(Anonymous Opinion)
Whether it’s paneer that’s actually undercooked tofu or pancit that’s literally made with dry spaghetti, HFS directors have a track record of bulldozing Asian cultures.
Last quarter, HFS debuted “Asian Slaw” an “ethnic” rendition of coleslaw. As an Asian American writer for the Nightly, I am personally offended. HFS needs to listen to the students who are passionately fighting for more diverse food options.
But it’s not just food, HFS Directors have mistreated Asian American RA’s and HFS Workers by firing many for attempting to unionize this fall.
As a community, we need to hold the UW administration accountable. We need coherent action. Our community deserves to be treated with respect by employers.
Moving forward, HFS leadership must:
Listen to students who want diverse food options
Rehire the RA’s they fired for unionizing
Allow employees to unionize and respect labor
However, the HFS and President Cauce have made it clear that they do not respect Asian American voices. Any win our movement will get is going to be a fight. But we won’t back down. Let’s build solidarity and take on the administration!
