Sandwich
A Poem
Peace is a chicken sandwich whenever I want it.
War is over. The battle is won.
No one is looking over my shoulder.
And I can have a chicken sandwich whenever I want.
No one to tell me no.
Dig that pit in my stomach with
Empty spoons.
No one to dread or hide this heaping plate from.
The boogeyman is gone.
I can eat whenever I want.
I can stay home. I can rest.
I can order in. I can be late.
I’m a body doing what bodies are meant to do.
I’m clumsy. I’m a sucker.
I’ve got no reason to be scared.
This body is all mine.
I don’t have to justify it anymore.
