Seattle Says ICE Is Not Welcome

Since August, the U.S. Military has expanded its military presence in the Caribbean and struck vessels off the coast of Venezuela, resulting in the deaths of 80 people. While it remains unclear what the exact motivations for this violence are, it is clear that the capitalists will benefit. UW continues its intimate relationship with war profiteer Boeing, which has products present in the conflict, which means blood is on the University's hands.

Last month, UW students and local community members rallied outside of the Laurel Village student housing area, which is currently closed off for construction, to protest. Greystar, a private equity firm and the nation’s largest real estate firm, partnered with UW and changed its plans last minute.

Today, elected Seattle mayor-elect Katie Wilson announced her transition team on Wednesday afternoon over Instagram. While it is heartening to see the emphasis the mayor elect has put on progressive voices, even appointing a member of UW’s own YDSA to the position on the student advisor committee, members of the UW community, including The Nightly, were horrified to find the former UW president, Ana Mari Cauce, on the prospective list.

An examination into the “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education,” from the Trump administration, responses from the UW community, and inaction from the University of Washington administration or President Robert J. Jones.

Call to Defend the Garden >:D Over the past few months, students and community members have been organizing the start to a guerrilla, community garden project. After the end of the UW Liberated Zone, the garden project and many supplies were relocated from the Quad to the Gould Hall Lawn. Recently, UW facilities have threatened and have begun removal of the garden. We are calling for support in defending the garden through activating and maintaining the space, expanding the projects, and through pressure campaigns.

Back in December, we wrote an article about the UW’s failure to protect a prospective athlete from a transphobic mob. The University has remained silent. This raises concerns about the UW's  commitment to the transgender community on campus.

As the Liberated Zone enters its second week, and as the ongoing negotiations between the United Front for Palestine (UF) and the University continue, people involved and the wider community are becoming nervous that the UF’s informal leadership are not acting in the best interest of the community and the encampment as a whole... There is cause for celebration and there is cause for concern. We will outline this in this article and talk about the systemic problems that created this situation...
