In Westport Washington, 24 Filipino migrant workers spent the last four months trapped inside several fishing vessels. In what has been described as a severe case of labor trafficking, workers were abandoned by their company and left without pay or US Visa.
On January 6th, a line of cars and people blocked the northbound lanes on I-5 for Palestine. So many descended onto the highway to join the blockade that the police– who had brought over thirty cars with them, as well as rubber bullet guns, power tools, and riot gear– made no arrests, recognizing that they couldn’t possibly transport everyone to jail.
Filipino American Students Fight For Philippine Human Rights Act
Wednesday, April 20th, was a big day for Anakbayan UW, a student group fighting for the liberation of the Filipino people. In an effort to pass the Philippine Human Rights Act (PHRA), student organizers went to Adam Smith in the Hub and asked him for support. His response was less than ideal and demonstrates the failures of neoliberalism.
